PRE-OESOPHAGECTOMY TRAINING PROGRAM
Moderate exercise before major operations is important to reduce breathing problems, strengthen muscles and improve recovery after the operation. Specifically the data shows that patients with higher VO2-max and anaerobic-threshold scores have better surgical outcomes and recovery after surgery. Patients fitness will be measured before surgery using cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPEX) where a number of measurements are taken while the patient cycles on a stationary bike. CrossFit CM2 has designed a simple program that can be followed by patients to improve their fitness and their CPEX scores. The program is requires very little equipment so it can be done at home. Patients will be invited to attend an induction session at CM2 to go through the movements and practice one of the workouts.
